The Tarot: A Key to the Wisdom of the Ages

by Paul Foster Case

Western Esoteric / Hermeticism

The Tarot: A Key to the Wisdom of the Ages is Paul Foster Case's systematic treatment of the Tarot as an instrument of meditation and self-development rather than of divination. Its central claim is that the imagery of the cards encodes a structured map of consciousness whose contemplation reshapes the inner life.

Case integrates the twenty-two Tarot trumps with the paths of the Qabalistic Tree of Life, correlating them with the Hebrew alphabet, color, and sound into a unified curriculum. Contemplating these correspondences, he holds, attunes the mind, and his musical background gives the system a distinctive emphasis on tone and vibration as transformative forces.

The book transmits the teaching of the Builders of the Adytum, the mystery school Case founded, which carried his method to an ongoing membership through graded correspondence lessons. Within the Western esoteric tradition it stands as an influential reframing of the Tarot into a teachable technology of inner transformation, blending Hermetic Qabalah with New Thought-style affirmation.

In its words

Everything in the universe is the self-expression of the I AM. This is the first principle, the primary existence, the First Mover.

I am a center of expression for the Primal Will-to-Good which eternally creates and sustains the universe.

Man can change conditions. This is the secret of his power to realize freedom.

All changes are primarily changes in mental imagery. Change the image, and ultimately the external form will change.

True concentration is perfect transparency, in which personality becomes a free, unobstructed channel for the passage downward and outward of the superconscious radiant energy.

The wand is a symbol of will, of which attention, the wand itself, is the essence, and to which memory, the wallet, is closely linked.

The Hermit is the Supreme Will, the cosmic, eternal urge to freedom.

Tarot Key Meditation — contemplating a Major Arcana Key (and colouring it) to impress its principle on the subconscious

Paul Foster Case (1884-1954), founder of the Builders of the Adytum (B.O.T.A.), taught that each of the 22 Major Arcana — which he called the "Keys" — is a precisely constructed picture-symbol of a cosmic…

Sound and Colour — intoning the tone of a Key or Hebrew letter while visualising its colour to attune consciousness

Alongside contemplating the Tarot Keys, Paul Foster Case taught a sound-and-colour practice: each of the 22 Hebrew letters (and so each Major Arcana Key, each path of the Tree of Life) is assigned both a colour and…
