The Silva Mind Control Method

by José Silva

Cybernetics, NLP & Cognitive Science

The Silva Mind Control Method codifies the self-development system Silva developed over two decades of informal experimentation and publicly launched in 1966. Its central claim is that deliberately lowering brain activity into the relaxed "alpha" state opens access to the subconscious, enabling improved learning, problem-solving, and intuitive functioning.

The method combines relaxation, visualization, and guided mental imagery into a sequence of repeatable drills, including the use of an inner "mental screen" for rehearsal and self-healing. Silva frames these techniques as a learnable mental technology rather than a spiritual initiation, restating older notions of higher guidance in the secular vocabulary of brainwaves.

The book served as a key translator of occult "higher mind" ideas into the language of neuroscience, anticipating later meditation, biofeedback, and brain-training markets. Mainstream science disputed its stronger claims, particularly those concerning remote diagnosis and ESP.

In its words

Everyone—no exceptions—everyone has a mind that can easily be trained to exercise powers that beginners openly doubt they have.

Practices it teaches

The Three Fingers Technique — Silva's conditioned focus cue

A self-installed anchor: by joining the thumb, index, and middle finger of either hand while in the calm alpha level and affirming what the gesture will do, you condition an association so that later, in ordinary…

The Glass of Water Technique — Silva's sleep-incubation for problem-solving

A deceptively simple Silva problem-solving ritual. Before sleep you hold a glass of water, frame your question, drink half, and sleep on it; on waking you drink the other half and repeat the intention — expecting…

Programming the Goal — Silva's mental rehearsal of the desired outcome

Silva's core manifestation technique: at the alpha level, on the mental screen, you picture the goal as already achieved — vividly, in the present, with the feeling of its accomplishment — to "program" it into the…

The Silva Mental Screen, Three Fingers & Mirror of the Mind

A cluster of imagery techniques from José Silva's "Silva Method" (originally "Silva Mind Control"), all run from a deliberately relaxed brain state Silva called the alpha level.

The Mirror of the Mind — Silva's problem-to-solution reframing imagery

A structured problem-solving variant of Silva's screen work. On the mental screen you imagine a full-length mirror with a blue frame, place the problem as it currently is in it, then move the mirror aside, change…

The Mental Screen — Silva's inner visualization workspace

The Mental Screen is Silva's name for an imagined screen in the mind's eye onto which the practitioner deliberately projects images.

Entering the Alpha Level — Silva's relaxation countdown induction

The foundational Silva practice: a structured, eyes-closed relaxation-plus-countdown that brings the practitioner to what Silva called the alpha level (or simply "your level") — a relaxed, inward, but fully awake…
