The Shiva Sutras
Vasugupta
Yoga & TantraThe Shiva Sutras are the revealed aphorisms that lie at the base of Kashmir Shaivism, traditionally received by the sage Vasugupta. Terse and gnomic, they are designed to be unfolded through commentary and lived realisation rather than read as discursive doctrine, and they anchor the non-dual Shaiva tradition of Kashmir.
The opening aphorism sets the key: consciousness itself is the Self. From this follows a vision of reality as the play of one awareness, in which the apparent world is not separate from the divine mind but its expression. Bondage, on this account, is not a substantial condition but a kind of self-forgetting, the one consciousness losing sight of its own nature amid its own display.
For a study of mind, the text offers a thoroughgoing identification of selfhood with consciousness, dissolving the gap between knower and known into a single awareness at play. Liberation accordingly becomes recognition rather than acquisition, the recovery of what was never truly lost, and the tradition built upon these sutras developed that recognition into a refined philosophy and practice of awareness.
