The Secret of the Golden Flower

Anonymous (Chinese alchemical tradition)

Taoism

The Secret of the Golden Flower is a Chinese manual of inner alchemy blending Taoist, Buddhist, and Confucian currents into a concise method of meditation. Transmitted in the lineage attributed to the immortal Lü Dongbin, it teaches the "circulation of the light": the turning of attention inward and upward until consciousness recovers its original, undivided nature.

The "golden flower" is the opening of that primal awareness, cultivated by quiet sitting, regulated breath, and the gathering of scattered mind into a single luminous centre. The text treats enlightenment not as belief but as a physiological-spiritual operation refining ordinary consciousness into its subtle source.

Little known in the West until Richard Wilhelm's translation and C. G. Jung's celebrated commentary, it became a bridge between Eastern contemplative practice and modern depth psychology's map of the self.
