The Psychedelic Experience: A Manual Based on the Tibetan Book of the Dead

by Ralph Metzner

Psychedelics & Cyber-Shamanism

The Psychedelic Experience: A Manual Based on the Tibetan Book of the Dead, which Ralph Metzner co-authored as a young Harvard collaborator, presents the psychedelic session as a guided passage modeled on the bardo states of Tibetan teaching. Its premise is that the trip is navigable terrain, and that a prepared map and mindset can steer it toward transcendence rather than terror.

The manual supplies readings and a staged structure intended to govern the unfolding experience, treating altered states as territory to be charted rather than chaos to be endured. Across his longer career Metzner extended this cartographic impulse, linking entheogens to Jungian individuation, yogic stages, and alchemical transmutation.

His distinctive contribution is integrative: by framing altered states as mappable, developmental terrain, he helped move the psychedelic project from countercultural provocation toward a structured psychology of consciousness that the transpersonal field and later psychedelic-therapy movement absorbed.
