The Principles of Nature, Her Divine Revelations

by Andrew Jackson Davis

American Spiritualism (philosophical founder); Harmonial Philosophy

The Principles of Nature, Her Divine Revelations is a long cycle of trance orations delivered by the self-styled Poughkeepsie Seer and transcribed by a scribe. Its central claim is that the spiritual universe is a structured, knowable reality, perceivable clairvoyantly in entranced states, and that the soul progresses through ascending spheres after death.

The book mixes mysticism, science, and cosmology, presenting the seer's inner vision as direct knowledge rather than faith. Drawing heavily on Swedenborgian afterlife imagery and mesmeric trance, it frames continuity beyond death as an empirical fact and famously anticipates an age when spiritual communion would be established.

Appearing a year before the 1848 rappings that ignited mass Spiritualism, it furnished the movement an intellectual framework in advance of the seance era. Together with the later Great Harmonia and its Harmonial Philosophy, it made its author the chief philosophical father of American Spiritualism.
