The Power of Your Subconscious Mind

by Joseph Murphy

Manifestation Systems

The Power of Your Subconscious Mind reduces New Thought to a single operational claim: that beliefs impressed upon the subconscious mind are objectively realised, in circumstance and in the body alike. The work states this in plain, repeatable language aimed at a mass readership.

Drawing on Troward's dual-mind model and the autosuggestion associated with Coué, it systematises the practice of impressing confident affirmations on the subconscious, especially in the drowsy, relaxed state before sleep when the conscious censor is quiet. Prayer is recast not as petition to an external deity but as structured self-suggestion, and the same mechanism is extended explicitly to physical healing.

Its significance lies in popularisation. Translating the esoteric vocabulary of his predecessors into accessible prose, Murphy produced one of the most widely circulated metaphysical self-help titles of the twentieth century and a primary channel through which subconscious-mind doctrine reached the general public.

In its words

Your subconscious mind does not argue with you. It accepts what your conscious mind decrees.

Remember, it is the world within, namely, your thoughts, feelings, and imagery, that makes your world without.

Practices it teaches

Drowsy-State Subconscious Impregnation — Murphy's Pre-Sleep Lullaby

A devotional gratitude technique from Joseph Murphy's The Power of Your Subconscious Mind (1963), taught in his chapter on practical techniques.

Decreeing Perfect Health — Murphy's Healing Affirmation

Murphy's healing practice: rather than dwelling on symptoms, you repeatedly affirm and inwardly occupy a state of wholeness and perfect health, with calm conviction, so the subconscious receives an image of health…

Imagine the Happy Ending — Murphy's Inner Conversation of the Fulfilled Wish

Murphy taught that "always imagine the happy ending" — when facing a problem or wish, you mentally rehearse the resolved, satisfying outcome, not the feared one.

The Mental Movie Method — Murphy's Pre-Sleep Picture-Play

Joseph Murphy's visualization technique in which you construct a short, vivid scene of your desire already fulfilled and replay it like a film in the mind — seeing it, hearing it, feeling it — in a relaxed state…

Scientific Prayer — Murphy's Three-Step Affirmative Prayer

Murphy's general theory of effective prayer, which he called "scientific prayer" — meaning prayer that follows a definite, repeatable method rather than pleading.

The Passing-Over Technique — Murphy's Induced Hand-Off to the Subconscious

Murphy's umbrella technique for how to get an idea accepted by the subconscious in the first place. He taught that ideas are "passed over" from the conscious to the subconscious most readily when the conscious mind…

Hand It to the Subconscious — Murphy's Sleep-On-It Decision Method

Murphy's method for getting answers and decisions: treat the subconscious as a wiser "servant" or "the workshop within," state your problem to it clearly before sleep, then let go completely and trust that the…
