The Physical Phenomena of Spiritualism
Parapsychology & SurvivalThe Physical Phenomena of Spiritualism is Hereward Carrington's critical survey of the bodily manifestations claimed in the séance room, including movements, materializations, and other physical effects attributed to mediums. Its governing claim is that such phenomena must be tested with the combined tools of psychical research and stage conjuring, since fraud pervaded the field.
Carrington's method draws on his unusual dual competence as both a member of the Society for Psychical Research and a student of magicians' techniques, allowing him to identify how séance effects could be simulated. He concluded that the overwhelming majority of mediumistic phenomena were fraudulent, while holding that a small, hard-to-dismiss residue might be genuine and that survival of consciousness remained an open question.
The work exemplifies the calibrated skepticism that distinguishes the critical strand of survival research from credulous advocacy. Carrington's positive conclusions about certain cases were disputed in his own day and have not been vindicated by later science; he is best read as a sincere, magic-literate investigator whose residual belief in some genuine effects remains contested.
