The Ocean of Theosophy

by William Quan Judge

Theosophy

The Ocean of Theosophy is William Quan Judge's compact manual of Theosophical teaching, written to render the movement's doctrine accessible to a general readership. Its purpose is to present the Theosophical view of cosmos, consciousness, and human evolution, including karma, reincarnation, and the sevenfold constitution of the human being, in clear and devotional prose.

Where the foundational Theosophical writings were dense and cosmopolitan, Judge distils the system into an orderly, readable idiom suited to the practical, self-improving temper of American metaphysical religion. The book preserves the master-and-hierarchy framework, the conviction that evolved adepts guide human spiritual development and that the individual can consciously cooperate with that evolution.

As one of the three principal founders of the Theosophical Society and the builder of its American branch, Judge used the work to Americanize Theosophical teaching. It helped prepare the cultural soil from which New Thought and the later New Age would grow, carrying the spiritual-hierarchy concept into American esoteric culture.

In its words

Mind is the intelligent part of the Cosmos, and in the collection of seven differentiations above roughly sketched, Mind is that in which the plan of the Cosmos is fixed or contained.

This is the permanent individuality which gives to every man the feeling of being himself and not some other; that which through all the changes of the days and nights from youth to the end of life makes us feel one identity through all the period; it bridges the gap made by sleep; in like manner it bridges the gap made by the sleep of death.

It is this, and not our brain, that lifts us above the animal.

Will is the force of Spirit in action and Life is a resultant of the action of Akasa, moved by Spirit, upon Matter.
