The Miracle of Mindfulness

by Thích Nhất Hạnh

Engaged Buddhism / Mindfulness

The Miracle of Mindfulness is Thích Nhất Hạnh's accessible introduction to mindfulness practice, written as guidance for sustaining awareness in everyday life. Its central teaching is that full, gentle attention to the present moment, beginning with the breath, transforms ordinary activity into a field of awakening.

The method is concrete and embodied: mindful breathing, walking, eating, and even washing dishes become occasions for presence rather than distraction. Alongside practice the book carries the teaching of interbeing, the recognition that nothing exists in isolation and that all phenomena inter-are, a Buddhist articulation of radical interconnection.

Drawn from a Vietnamese Zen master, poet, and peace activist who founded the Plum Village community and helped shape Engaged Buddhism, the book became a primary source of the present-moment awareness that pervades modern spirituality and the secular mindfulness movement. It represents the gentle, ethically grounded, wellbeing-centred pole of the contemplative tradition, linking inner practice to compassionate action.

In its words

Breath is the bridge which connects life to consciousness, which unites your body to your thoughts. Whenever your mind becomes scattered, use your breath as the means to take hold of your mind again.

Feelings, whether of compassion or irritation, should be welcomed, recognized, and treated on an absolutely equal basis; because both are ourselves.

To think in terms of either pessimism or optimism oversimplifies the truth. The problem is to see reality as it is.
