The Master Key System

by Charles F. Haanel

New Thought / success metaphysics

The Master Key System, copyrighted in 1916, is the principal work of Charles Francis Haanel (1866-1949), an American businessman and New Thought author. First issued as a correspondence course, it presents its teaching as a disciplined, week-by-week curriculum of twenty-four lessons, each paired with a practical exercise, designed to train mental concentration, visualization, and the deliberate use of thought to shape circumstance.

Its significance is chiefly methodological. Where much New Thought emphasized devotion or healing, Haanel reframed the tradition as a structured training program in attention: sit still, focus, hold an image, repeat. The result reads less like a church and more like a mental gymnasium, treating focused attention as a faculty to be developed by daily, repeated effort rather than received in a moment of grace.

The work became a touchstone of the success-and-attraction stream of New Thought, articulating thought as a causal, attracting force in clear and programmatic terms. Frequently cited as an influence on later prosperity writers, it was rediscovered by the modern law-of-attraction wave, and it forms a direct link between nineteenth-century mind-cure, twentieth-century self-development, and contemporary manifestation culture.

In its words

The subconscious mind is the seat of habit.

Ease and perfection are gained by repetition.

What method is necessary in order to impress the subconscious? Mentally state what is wanted.

The conscious mind is the seat of the will and may impress the subconscious.

The sure method of overcoming wrong suggestions is by the use of a strong counter suggestion, frequently repeated.

The ideas it carries

Practices it teaches

Affirmation of Wholeness — 'I am whole, perfect, strong...' held until felt (Haanel, Part Nine)

Alongside the silent concentration drills, Charles F. Haanel teaches a spoken/held affirmation as the way to install a chosen state in the subconscious.

Entering the Silence for Insight — Haanel's concentration on Insight (Part Fifteen)

Later in Charles F. Haanel's graded course, once stillness, thought-control, release and steady imaging are in hand, the practice turns toward going within — entering what Haanel calls "the Silence." This is not…

Constructive Visualization — building the image clearly (Haanel's Part Six/Seven exercise)

This is the imaging stage of Charles F. Haanel's graded course — the goal the earlier rungs were preparing for.

Letting Go of Adverse Conditions — Haanel's mental-freedom exercise (Part Four)

This is the fourth rung of Charles F. Haanel's graded course. By Part Three the student can relax the body completely; Part Four takes that relaxation into the emotions.

Mental Stillness — inhibiting all thought (Haanel's Part Two exercise)

This is the second rung of Charles F. Haanel's graded 24-week course in The Master Key System. In Part One the student sits perfectly still until the body fully obeys.

The Master Key 'Sit Still' Drill — Haanel's weekly concentration exercises

Charles F. Haanel built The Master Key System (1912) as a 24-week correspondence course, and each weekly part closes with a short practical exercise that must be mastered before the next is attempted.
