The Jewel Ornament of Liberation

by Gampopa

Dagpo Kagyu Tibetan Buddhism

The Jewel Ornament of Liberation is the foundational treatise of the Dagpo Kagyu lineage, mapping the full path to awakening. Its central achievement is the union of two streams: the systematic, stage-by-stage Kadam path and the immediacy of Mahamudra, the direct recognition of the nature of mind itself.

The method is integrative and sequential. Students first ground themselves in the graduated cultivation of mental qualities and only then are introduced to the direct seeing into awareness, so that patient, methodical training joins sudden recognition rather than displacing it.

Written by a master who trained first as a physician, then in the Kadam tradition, and finally received Mahamudra from the yogi Milarepa, the work carries that direct pointing into an institutional teaching. From it descended the Dagpo Kagyu schools, including the Karma Kagyu and its Karmapa line.

In its words

The mind is the sovereign, and the body and speech are the servants.

Generally speaking, virtue and nonvirtue depend entirely on one's mental motivation.

Therefore, this mind is the foundation for training.

When can this confusion be transformed into primordial wisdom? When one attains unsurpassable enlightenment.

Therefore, from today onward, you should make as much effort as possible to achieve unsurpassable enlightenment.

Therefore, one should practice loving-kindness and compassion.

Awareness of the impermanence of all composite phenomena leads one to release attachment to this life.

Practices it teaches

The Four Dharmas of Gampopa — a four-line path-map contemplation

The Four Dharmas of Gampopa are four short lines, attributed to Gampopa Sönam Rinchen (1079–1153), that compress the entire Buddhist path into a single aspiration.

Precious Human Birth & Impermanence — Gampopa's motivating contemplation

In the opening chapters of The Jewel Ornament of Liberation, Gampopa systematises the two reflections that traditionally light the fire of practice: the preciousness of a human life and its impermanence.

Calm Abiding, Gampopa's Way — settling the mind in workable, natural rest

In The Jewel Ornament of Liberation, Gampopa presents calm abiding (shamatha, Tibetan zhiné) as the perfection of meditative concentration and the indispensable ground for everything that follows.
