The Happiness Advantage

by Shawn Achor

Applied positive psychology

The Happiness Advantage applies positive psychology to work and performance, reversing the common formula that success produces happiness. Its central claim is that a positive brain performs better, so happiness is a precursor to and driver of success rather than merely its reward.

Achor organises the popular literature into seven principles, among them the "Tetris effect," which trains attention toward the positive, the "20-second rule" for making good habits easier and bad ones harder by adjusting friction, and the value of social connection as a buffer against stress. The book is a practitioner's synthesis of academic findings, drawing on broaden-and-build research and the wider positive-psychology corpus, rather than a primary research program.

It offers a clear statement of the intuition that inner state is causal, here applied to productivity, though some of its workplace claims rest on uneven evidence and inherit positive psychology's broader replication concerns.

In its words

Happiness is not the belief that we don't need to change; it is the realization that we can.

Thanks to this cutting-edge science, we now know that happiness is the precursor to success, not merely the result.
