The Devi Mahatmya

Attrib. Markandeya

Vedanta & Advaita

The Devi Mahatmya, "Glory of the Goddess," is the foundational scripture of the Shakta tradition, celebrating the supreme reality as feminine — the Great Goddess who is at once the power that creates, sustains, and destroys the cosmos.

Through three cycles of myth in which she vanquishes demons the gods cannot defeat, the text presents her as Mahamaya, the very power of consciousness that both veils reality and, when known, liberates. Every being and force is a form of her one energy (shakti).

Recited daily in worship for over a millennium, it grounds the vast devotional and tantric cultus of the Goddess in a vision where ultimate power and ultimate awareness are one and feminine.
