The Chaldean Oracles
Anonymous (attrib. Julian the Theurgist)
Neoplatonism & Greek PhilosophyThe Chaldean Oracles are a body of hexameter verses, surviving only in fragments, that the later Neoplatonists revered almost as scripture. They describe a fiery, hierarchical cosmos emanating from a supreme paternal Intellect, threaded with intermediary powers and the world-soul.
Their practical core is theurgy: the doctrine that the soul, fallen into matter, ascends not by reasoning alone but by sacred rites, divine names, and the kindling of the inner fire. The Oracles supplied Iamblichus, Proclus, and their heirs with the ritual technology of ascent that distinguished late Platonism from mere philosophy.
Through the Renaissance recovery of Neoplatonism they passed into Western esotericism, where their vision of a mind-structured, ensouled universe reachable by disciplined ascent became foundational.
