The Biology of Belief

by Bruce H. Lipton

Fringe Biology / Consciousness-and-Cells

The Biology of Belief argues that genes are not autonomous controllers of cells but are switched on and off by environmental signals, including, its author contends, the beliefs and perceptions held by the mind. From this it draws the conclusion that consciousness can shape physiology at the cellular level.

The argument reframes the cell membrane, rather than the nucleus, as the cell's "brain," responding to environmental and energetic signals, and proposes that reprogramming subconscious beliefs can transform health and life. Its starting point in epigenetics is established science.

The extension from gene expression responding to environment to beliefs and energy fields directly reprogramming cells is widely criticized as overreach. The book is a textbook instance of the pattern of recasting New Thought's "thoughts affect the body" in the vocabulary of cell biology.

In its words

We are not victims of our genes, but masters of our fates, able to create lives overflowing with peace, happiness and love.

It is not gene-directed hormones and neurotransmitters that control our bodies and our minds; our beliefs control our bodies, our minds and thus our lives.
