The Art of War
Sun Tzu
Ancient Source TextsThe Art of War, attributed to Sun Tzu, is the classic treatise on strategy from Warring States China. Though framed as a manual of military command, it reads at a deeper level as a discipline of perception, teaching that the supreme victory is won before the battle is joined, in the mind, through knowing oneself and the field.
Its often-cited principle that war is the art of deception and positioning is, in substance, a doctrine of clear seeing over brute force. The accomplished commander prevails by accurate assessment, timing and the shaping of conditions, so that the decisive contest is settled in judgement rather than in slaughter. Force expended is treated as a sign of failed strategy; the highest skill subdues the opponent without direct conflict.
As a foundational classic far beyond its original sphere, the text has been read for centuries as a guide to conduct under any form of contention. For a study of the mind it locates real power in clarity of perception and self-knowledge, holding that the disciplined, undeceived mind is the true instrument of mastery.
