Passport to Magonia

by Jacques Vallée

Internet Occultism, High Strangeness & Game Theory

Passport to Magonia is an investigation into unidentified phenomena that breaks decisively with the prevailing extraterrestrial-spacecraft hypothesis. Its central claim is that modern UFO encounters belong to a single phenomenon that recurs across human history, manifesting as fairy abductions, religious apparitions, and meetings with non-human intelligences, and changing its costume to match each era's beliefs.

The argument proceeds by comparison, setting contemporary sighting reports beside centuries of folklore and showing structural continuities between them. From this Vallée derives the interdimensional hypothesis, relocating the phenomenon from outer space to other layers of reality or mind, and the more far-reaching notion of a spiritual control system: a feedback mechanism whose target is human belief itself, conditioning culture over long timescales.

The reframing established Vallée as the intellectually serious counterweight to nuts-and-bolts ufology, and its emphasis on belief as the manipulated variable resonates with the wider mind-power conviction that conviction shapes reality.
