Our Mathematical Universe

by Max Tegmark

Digital Physics / Cosmology

Our Mathematical Universe advances the Mathematical Universe Hypothesis: the claim that the physical universe is not merely described by mathematics but is a mathematical structure, so that physical and mathematical existence are the same thing. On this view our universe is one structure among all logically possible ones.

The argument moves from mainstream cosmology toward bold metaphysical speculation, building a taxonomy of multiverses that culminates in a Level IV multiverse comprising all mathematical structures. Its emphasis falls on structure over substance, reframing ultimate reality as abstract rather than concretely material.

The work distinguishes the author's empirical cosmology, which is established science, from the hypothesis itself, which is explicitly philosophical and largely untestable. It supplies consciousness-first and digital-physics writers a respectable vocabulary, while marking a clear boundary: a reality that is mathematical is not the same as a reality that is mental.

In its words

This crazy-sounding belief of mine that our physical world not only is described by mathematics, but that it is mathematics, makes us self-aware parts of a giant mathematical object.
