On the Infinite Universe and Worlds

by Giordano Bruno

Renaissance Hermetism / art of memory

On the Infinite Universe and Worlds advances a radical cosmology of innumerable suns and worlds, animated throughout by a single divine life. Its central claim is that the universe is infinite and everywhere pervaded by one living substance, so that all things participate in a single animated whole.

The argument pushes past Copernicus to dissolve the bounded cosmos entirely, and it accords with Bruno's wider project of treating the trained imagination as an active, world-organizing power rather than passive storage. Mind, for Bruno, is a microcosm capable of mirroring and so internalizing the order of the whole.

Placed by Frances Yates at the centre of the Renaissance Hermetic tradition, Bruno fused the art of memory with a vision of imagination as a creative, quasi-magical faculty. His insistence that imagination shapes knowledge fed directly into later esoteric and pantheist thought.

In its words

Thus is the excellence of God magnified and the greatness of his kingdom made manifest; He is glorified not in one, but in countless suns; not in a single earth, a single world, but in a thousand thousand, I say in an infinity of worlds.
