Old Diary Leaves

by Henry Steel Olcott

Theosophy

Old Diary Leaves is Henry Steel Olcott's multi-volume history of the Theosophical Society, written from the vantage of its co-founder and first President. It records the movement's early years, its personalities, and its claimed contact with the "Masters," offering an insider's chronicle of how Theosophy was organized and spread.

The narrative reflects Olcott's role as the Society's organizational engine: he recounts the building of an international body, the move of its headquarters to Adyar in India, and its expansion across continents. Throughout, he sustains the conviction that the Society stood under the guidance of the Mahatmas, helping to install the spiritual-hierarchy concept at the institutional core of modern occultism.

The work documents the Theosophical Society as the principal nineteenth-century conduit through which Asian metaphysics, karma, reincarnation, subtle bodies, and graded planes of consciousness, entered Western esoteric and popular vocabulary. As a record by a prominent Western Buddhist convert, it also models the syncretic spiritual identity later normalized by the New Age.
