Mind, Matter and Quantum Mechanics

by Henry Stapp

Quantum/Consciousness Science

Mind, Matter and Quantum Mechanics develops a quantum theory of mind in which conscious attention plays a genuine causal role in the brain. Its central claim is that focused attention, by repeatedly "asking questions" of the brain's quantum state, can hold neural processes in place via the quantum Zeno effect, providing a physical basis for free will and mental effort.

Building on the von Neumann-Wigner tradition that ties measurement to consciousness, Stapp offers a mathematically articulated account of how mind might influence behaviour without violating quantum theory. It is a serious but firmly contested minority position, facing the decoherence objections that beset quantum-brain theories.

Crucially, the theory concerns the efficacy of attention over one's own brain, a respectable claim about mental causation, not the manifestation claim that thought reshapes external reality, a scope distinction often blurred when the work is cited.

In its words

The purpose of this work is to resolve together four basic questions concerning the nature of nature.
