Lovingkindness: The Revolutionary Art of Happiness

by Sharon Salzberg

Insight Meditation in the West

Lovingkindness: The Revolutionary Art of Happiness is Sharon Salzberg's exposition of metta, the systematic cultivation of goodwill toward oneself and others. Its central claim is that lovingkindness is a trainable skill rather than a fixed disposition, a quality of heart and mind that can be deliberately developed through repeated practice.

Drawing on the Theravada vipassana and metta traditions she studied in India and Burma, Salzberg presents the cultivation of kindness as a matter of directing attention and intention again and again toward benevolence, beginning with oneself and extending outward. The method treats mental states as malleable, so that sustained practice gradually reorganizes one's inner life and relationships.

The book is a touchstone of the Western insight-meditation movement, which Salzberg helped found through the Insight Meditation Society. By demonstrating that the quality of attention can be shaped, it carried contemplative training toward the mainstream of secular wellbeing culture, a current her later work extended further.

In its words

Love exists in itself, not relying on owning or being owned.

The difference between misery and happiness depends on what we do with our attention.

No external condition can prevent love; no one and no thing can stop it.
