Light on Yoga
Yogic & TantricLight on Yoga is the classic modern manual of hatha yoga, systematically presenting the postures and breathing practices of the discipline. Its central claim is that the body is the first instrument through which consciousness is refined, so that precise physical practice is a gateway to mental stability and meditative absorption.
The book teaches through exacting description of alignment, long holds, and the innovative use of props, making demanding postures accessible to ordinary practitioners. Throughout, it frames asana not as exercise but as a disciplined approach to the inner dimensions mapped by Patanjali.
Through the work and its worldwide schools, Iyengar brought the yogic worldview of breath, prana, and body-mind unity to a vast audience, becoming a principal vector by which the somatic-attention wing of mind-power and modern wellness culture entered the West.
In its words
Yoga is the method by which the restless mind is calmed and the energy directed into constructive channels. As a mighty river which when properly harnessed by dams and canals, creates a vast reservoir of water, prevents famine and provides abundant power for industry; so also the mind, when controlled, provides a reservoir of peace and generates abundant energy for human uplift.
The word Yoga is derived from the Sanskrit root yuj meaning to bind, join, attach and yoke, to direct and concentrate one's attention on, to use and apply. It also means union or communion. It is the true union of our will with the will of God.
Practices it teaches
Meditation Through the Body — even penetration of awareness as dharana/dhyana
Iyengar's understanding that concentration and meditation are reached through the disciplined body and breath, not apart from them.
Precision Asana — exacting alignment, intelligent extension, and the steady hold
This is Iyengar's signature contribution to modern yoga: the posture (asana) practised with extreme precision of alignment, held steadily for a sustained time, with attention spread evenly through the whole body…
Practice with Props — belts, blocks, blankets, bolsters, chairs, wall & ropes
Iyengar's distinctive methodological innovation: the systematic use of props so that correct alignment is available to every body, not only the supple and strong.
Savasana — conscious relaxation and the quieting of the brain
Savasana (Corpse Pose) is, in Iyengar's hands, far more than "lying down at the end of class." He treats it as one of the hardest and most important practices: a systematic, conscious relaxation in which you lie…
Daily Sadhana — abhyasa & vairagya, the two wings of regular practice
The meta-practice that holds all the others: disciplined, regular, attentive daily practice (sadhana) sustained over years. Iyengar, following Patanjali (Yoga Sutras 1.12–16), names two inseparable wings.
