Journeys Out of the Body

by Robert Monroe

Extradimensional & Non-Physical

Journeys Out of the Body is Monroe's first book, documenting the spontaneous out-of-body episodes that began in his life in the late 1950s. Its central claim is that consciousness can separate from the physical body and move through other states of reality, and that these experiences are open to systematic, repeatable investigation.

Bringing an audio engineer's pragmatism to phenomena he initially found disorienting, Monroe records and classifies his episodes and develops the Hemi-Sync method of binaural sound to induce altered states deliberately. He maps experience into numbered "Focus Levels," converting astral projection from an occult or accidental event into a reproducible acoustic technology.

The book popularized the very term "out-of-body experience" for a mass audience and founded the practical tradition continued through The Monroe Institute. It established the model later analyzed in the CIA's "Gateway Process" report.

Practices it teaches

Astral Projection — Intentional Out-of-Body Experience

Astral projection is the deliberate induction of an out-of-body experience (OBE): the vivid, first-person sense that your conscious awareness has separated from your physical body and can perceive and move on its…

Monroe's Pre-Session Intent Affirmation — 'I will consciously perceive and remember...

Tucked inside Monroe's induction routine is a small but pivotal step that stands on its own as a technique: at the moment you reach deep relaxation, before anything else happens, you state your intent.

Monroe's Focus 10 — 'Mind Awake, Body Asleep' (Hemi-Sync)

After Journeys Out of the Body, Robert Monroe and The Monroe Institute turned his hand-built relaxation ladder into a structured, audio-assisted map of consciousness states he called Focus levels.

Monroe's Vibrational State & Separation — the OBE Induction

This is the core induction Robert Monroe taught in Journeys Out of the Body (1971): once you can hold deep, lucid relaxation (his Condition D), you deliberately generate a "state of vibration" — a roaring…

Monroe's Borderland Sleep State — Conditions A–D

Before Robert Monroe could induce the vibrational state or leave the body, he had to solve a harder, plainer problem: how to stay consciously awake at the exact edge of sleep without falling over it.
