Ishvarapratyabhijna-karika (Stanzas on the Recognition of the Lord)
Buddhist Mind-OnlyThe Ishvarapratyabhijna-karika furnishes the rigorous philosophical foundation of the Pratyabhijna, or Recognition, school of Kashmir Shaivism. Its central claim is that consciousness is not a passive succession of momentary cognitions but a single, self-luminous, active awareness, and that the whole universe is the free self-expression of this one divine consciousness, identified with Shiva.
Against Buddhist idealists who reduced reality to an impersonal stream, Utpaladeva argues that awareness possesses two essential powers: prakasa, the light of manifestation by which anything appears at all, and vimarsha, the self-reflective "I" that knows itself. Liberation, accordingly, is pratyabhijna, the sudden recognition that one's own deepest self is the universal creative awareness that projects the world out of itself as an artist projects an image.
By making consciousness creative and personal rather than merely the substrate of perception, the work stands among the closest ancient ancestors of the later claim that the self is the source of its own reality.
