Flim-Flam!

Critics & Skeptics

Flim-Flam! is a skeptical investigation of paranormal and pseudoscientific claims by the stage magician and investigator James Randi. Its central argument is that phenomena widely accepted as evidence of psychic or supernatural power, dowsing, faith healing, psychic surgery, and the like, dissolve under controlled examination, and that the conjuror's knowledge of deception is often better suited to exposing them than the scientist's.

The method is case-by-case debunking. Randi recounts firsthand tests and exposures, showing how ordinary trickery, suggestion, and credulity can produce seemingly impossible results, and how investigators untrained in deception are readily fooled.

The book became a landmark of the modern skeptical movement, a representative voice of the critical, debunking tradition that scrutinises the mind-power and consciousness claims gathered elsewhere in this collection. It stands as a counterweight insisting on controlled evidence over anecdote and conviction.
