Far Journeys

by Robert Monroe

Extradimensional & Non-Physical

Far Journeys is Monroe's second account of out-of-body exploration, extending the work begun in his earlier writing into a more elaborate cartography of non-physical states. Its central claim is that consciousness can detach from the body and travel, and that these journeys disclose a structured terrain that can be mapped and navigated.

Approaching his experiences with an engineer's methodology, Monroe describes his system of numbered "Focus Levels" and the acoustic technology of Hemi-Sync, in which slightly different frequencies delivered to each ear drive the brain toward altered states. The framework treats consciousness as an exploratory vehicle and non-physical reality as territory to be surveyed.

Through The Monroe Institute the methods reached a wide audience, and the underlying model informed the analysis later compiled in the CIA's "Gateway Process" report. The work stands as a direct technical ancestor of today's binaural-beats applications.

In its words

I am more than my physical body. Because I am more than physical matter, I can perceive that which is greater than the physical world.

Practices it teaches

Monroe's Focus 10 — 'Mind Awake, Body Asleep' (Hemi-Sync)

After Journeys Out of the Body, Robert Monroe and The Monroe Institute turned his hand-built relaxation ladder into a structured, audio-assisted map of consciousness states he called Focus levels.
