Breaking the Habit of Being Yourself
Modern Internet EcosystemBreaking the Habit of Being Yourself (2012) is a work by Joe Dispenza, born in 1962, an American chiropractor and author who rose to prominence after appearing in the 2004 film What the BLEEP Do We Know!?. His origin narrative centers on a cycling accident in which he fractured several vertebrae and, declining recommended surgery, claims to have healed himself through concentrated mental reconstruction, a story he uses to ground his thesis that focused mind-states produce measurable physical change.
The book's central project is to re-dress New Thought manifestation in the vocabulary of neuroscience and physics. Where earlier teachers spoke of belief or vibration, Dispenza speaks of rewiring neural circuits, epigenetic change, brainwave states, and "tuning" into a quantum field. The operative practice is structured, guided meditation rather than affirmation or ritual, presented as the means of breaking habitual emotional patterns and changing one's state.
His formula pairs elevated emotion with clear intention in meditative brainwave states, framed as the route to healing and exceptional outcomes, and staged in large workshops presented with measurement and quasi-clinical data. However contested by mainstream scientists, this scientific idiom gave the manifestation tradition a credibility-signaling language suited to a wellness and biohacking audience, making Dispenza a major bridge between metaphysical self-help and the modern meditation industry.
In its words
The quantum field responds not to what we want; it responds to who we are being.
To change is to think greater than how we feel. To change is to act greater than the familiar feelings of the memorized self.
If you want a new outcome, you will have to break the habit of being yourself, and reinvent a new self.
A memory without the emotional charge is called wisdom.
When you think from your past memories, you can only create past experiences.
Meditation opens the door between the conscious and subconscious minds. We meditate to enter the operating system of the subconscious, where all of those unwanted habits and behaviors reside.
Surrender requires that you give up what you think you know from your limited mind, especially your belief about how this problem in your life should be taken care of.
When how you appear is who you are, you are free from the enslavement of your past.
