A Course in Miracles
Extradimensional & Non-PhysicalA Course in Miracles (1976) originated with Helen Schucman (1909-1981), a clinical and research psychologist at Columbia University and a self-described atheist deeply uneasy with the experience that would define her legacy. Beginning in 1965, she reported an inner "Voice" identifying itself as Jesus that dictated, over roughly seven years, the text she took down in shorthand while her colleague William Thetford typed it. Schucman remained ambivalent about the material and shunned public association with it.
The Course's central claim is a radical psychological reframing of reality. The entire perceived world of separation, fear, and bodies is held to be an illusion projected by the ego; the only meaningful choice is between fear and love within the mind, and all genuine change occurs there rather than in external circumstance. Cause is located entirely at the level of mind, not in any manipulation of the outer world.
Its operative mechanism is forgiveness, understood not as pardoning real wrongs but as recognizing that the separation and the offense never truly occurred, thereby dissolving the illusion and restoring awareness of an undivided oneness. By translating nondual metaphysics into the vocabulary of clinical psychology and Christian language, the Course became a widely influential bridge between Western psychology and the nondual stream of mind-power spirituality.
In its words
This course can therefore be summed up very simply in this way: Nothing real can be threatened. Nothing unreal exists. Herein lies the peace of God.
The course does not aim at teaching the meaning of love, for that is beyond what can be taught. It does aim, however, at removing the blocks to the awareness of love's presence, which is your natural inheritance.
It is a required course. Only the time you take it is voluntary. Free will does not mean that you can establish the curriculum. It means only that you can elect what you want to take at a given time.
Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.
We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us.
As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.
A miracle worker is an artist of the soul. There's no higher art than living a good life.
The cosmic spotlight isn't pointed at you; it radiates from within you.
If we wait for the world's permission to shine, we will never receive it.
We are no longer ambitious for ourselves, but are rather inspired by the vision of a healed world.
Inspiration rearranges our energies. It sources within us a new power and direction.
THE LIGHT DOES THE WORK. It makes you look good. How do we begin to change the world standard? I have no idea. I suppose it would start with a few good role models. People who would say, 'I'm going to be myself' and let this be enough. It starts with me. To demonstrate that I am good enough. Not later, but now. I am whole and perfect as God created me.
Miracles are thoughts because everything is thought. Nothing has existence outside our minds.
The miracle is the thought that corrects or undoes the ego's thought of separation.
The problems are never out there in the world, but within our minds.
You cannot change your mind about something if you do not know it is there.
It is the ego that judges; and when we judge, we always judge based on form.
Remember, it is very easy to get trapped by words.
The Course is not about the world. It's not about the body. It's not about time. It's about the Mind.
We hear when we give up trying to figure life out and in desperation cry out for help.
It is best, however, not to wait for crisis in order to be in communication.
